UMA SERPENTE HÍBRIDA! (click here english version)

ENGLISH:

In the early 80s, I had the pleasure of participating in one of those Odyssey championships. At the time, I still hadn´t the console, but this championship was another decisive factor in choosing my first (and favorite) console. About the championship, I intend to write more about it in future articles. Continuing the month of monsters, my post this week is about the game "Power Lords", was the aforementioned championship that saw it for the first time, unfortunately, did not get a chance to play it at the time. The official championship games were Turtles, Attack of The Timelord and KC Munchkin. Power Lords, Q * Bert and Killer Bees were there for demonstration and unlike league games, where time was limited, the exposed for demonstration games could be played, but as there was a time who came first could stay there for hours, making access to them difficult. Anyway, I was delighted with the snake when I saw (ops!). Spent over a year or so that unforgettable event, I gained my Power Lords cartridge . After the ritual of reading the manual and its magnificent illustrations was time to play. Behold start frustrations. The first one, I knew, the game didnt have the classic black background. I always liked the black backgrounds, I think they add a unique´arcade charm to the  games, plus the fact that reinforces the colors of other objects on the screen. Of course, the night becomes the most cinematic battles. Thinking, this, years ago I made a "plus" version for the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nho0BFxUb-c. But worse was to come. The rules of the games seemed to have been written by Aleister Crowley:  "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law"! It was something like this, you started the game, but did not have a specific goal, could shoot the  door, snake, the volcanic rocks, lava, or just get in the flying back and forth! To make matters worse the game scoring rules are even stranger. All your effort is rewarded with a measly points. As I recall hit the door gave 45 points to the player, each destroyed volcanic rock was worth 3 points and so on. But a volcanic eruption, a totally random event gave 1000 points to the player. It's almost like a game of Quidditch. You have to score goals, escape from a killer ball, but in the end, you win if you catch the Snitch. For what do the other things, then? ?????? Many urban legends about games arose at that time, specifically on the 2600, which was the most popular system at the time. I remember hearing about a possible appearance of Gargamel in The Smurfs game. Also had something about Enduro game in which said it appeared a person giving a checkered flag, among others. I used to tell some friends, that sometimes Gryptogg, Raygoth and Arkus (although never knew who was who on the cover of the game) used to go out from inside the volcano and attack the player, I think that's how the legends arose. The fact is that Power Lords always seemed an incomplete game. I used to think the game with a kind of complement in style  of "Super Cobra". Today, thanks to access to information is perceived that "The Snake" was never actually completed. The game is the ultimate release in the United States. It is as if to say to Ed Averett (game developer): "It's over" and he responsse: "Okay, so let me make another buck with this  unfinhised game" A careful reading of the American version of the magazine "Odyssey Adventure" in site of our friend and partner David Flemming, begins to give clues about this http://www.ozyr.com/o2adv/pages/sum83p14.html. The magazine makes it clear that the object of the game is: "Destroy the snake before entering the fortress." For the avoidance of any doubt the recent discoveries of the prototypes of the same game for the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision contains a second part inside the volcano. So I had the idea of trying a "hybrid'serie" in which also plan to include the game Demon Attack and the phase of the "castle".

The first part of the project includes some graphical changes in the original game, and should include also the "death" of the serpent. Once fulfilled the first part of the mission, the player must enter the volcano and defeat the other villains of the game, now popular Gryptogg, Raygoth and Arkus. There will also be inside the volcano, a more volcanic rocks that should be avoided. I did a video for this part because the images generated by the emulator are not faithful to the console. Below is a picture of this part of the project if ever completed will be released by Packrat Video Games.

Did Adam Power will finally have his meeting with the terrible Arkus!

Back in the eighties I knew nothing about this game, because it was never released here in Europe. I saw it the first time many years later at John Donzillas Multicart. I loved the snake. It is wonderful animated. I never saw something like this at my Videopac. Again many years later I saw at youtube, that the Atari 2600 version has a second screen. And I ask me, why has our system only one screen? Ok, our snake looks fantastic and the Atari snake looks ridiculous. Maybe our system has not enough power for a second screen, I thought.

But now you show us, that our system has enough power for a complete game. Great ! Will your game, that will be maybe released, also include your fantastic plus version?

That´s the coolest part on Internet thing. From my side I never could dream with some of my fav games with better (plus) graphics, Jopac games and other games like Backgammon, Blobbers, Nigthmare etc. You´re rigth the Power Lords snake is probably the finest O2 aniamtion, I even can´t remember something so nice on the contemporary consoles. Other highligths are the sound and visual effects (explosion, eruption), sadly the game miss an objective. By now it´s hard to tell something about your question while it´s not even garanteed the conclusion of the project, let´s see what the future reserves...

Yes, without the internet I would not know anything from Videopac 56-60 because here in Germany I didn´t know they, or the wonderful Jopac games (in the eighties I didn´t knew what a Jopac was. On the back side of a Videopac+ case was the info “also for Jopac consoles”. But what in a hell is a Jopac?) ,or that my Videopac was also sold in Brazil named Odyssey! My collection would be also very boring. Now I have all my european Videopacs, many Jopacs, many Odyssey2 games, prototypes, The Voice and some different consoles. Without the internet there were also no homebrew scene. No wonderful new games like WILDLIFE+. Oh man, that were really boring.
But the absolute highlight of the internet was, that I meet some very kind persons, I won´t miss anymore like Marc from Belgium, Dieter from Austria or you Rafael from the other side of the earth and all the other guys from the videopac forum. That was the greatest part of the internet!
